Jeopardy First Edition -- Game #7
Hi friends!
Let's take a look at Jeopardy! First Edition Game #7. As before, my goal is to share what I've learned about the clues in this game.
Notes are in the order they appear in the original video, which you can find here.
Wikipedia is my primary source for much of this material (so take that with a grain of salt).
Jeopardy! Round
Categories: Asia, Five Senses, Presidents, Heroes, Hollywood Romance, X's and O'x
- Presidents ($300): Lyndon B. Johnson was married to Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson. Their two daughters: Lynda Bird Johnson and Luci Baines Johnson. LBJ was born, raised, and died at LBJ Ranch, now Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. I can't find a reliable reference to his dog having the initials LBJ (Can you? Let me know in the comments.) Apparently, he had two beagles named Him and Her and another dog named Edgar.
- X's and O's ($100): The film, listed as "Oh, God!", was released in 1977.
- Heroes ($300): I had no idea that Lew Wallace was a Union general in the American Civil War that wrote Ben-Hur as a distraction from his legal work in the 1870s!
- X's and O's ($400): I think I should have gotten credit for this. The official title appears to be "O Canada".
- X's and O's ($500): I was in the ballpark on this. There is a Bell X-1, which is a rocket-powered plane, but only made it to 90,000 or so feet. The X-1 series was designed for supersonic speeds, not so much super high altitudes.
- Hollywood Romance ($500): Interesting fact: Susan Hayes is the only actor/actress to appear on Days of Our Lives in all seven decades that the show has been in production! Both Bill and Susan won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Daytime Emmy Awards.
Double Jeopardy! Round
Categories: Saintly Cities, Famous Pairs, Fruits & Veggies, The 30's, Fathers, Rock 'N' Roll
- Saintly Cities ($800): St. Joseph is on the west side of the state of Missouri--St. Louis is on the east side. Very different places.
- The 30's ($800): The airport in Barrow, Alaska is today known as the Wiley Post-Will Rogers Memorial Airport. The crash site was about 16 miles from Barrow.
- Fruits & Veggies ($1000): A Google search suggests that "Brodowin King" is one type of cheese that is infused with carrot juice for color.
- Saintly Cities ($400): That population number is now 12 million people.
- Fathers ($200): That story of Abraham sacrificing his son to God is in Genesis 22, if you're curious.
- Fathers ($600): Father Edward Flanagan was the founder of Boys Town (which was made into a movie). Boys Town was an orphanage and educational complex near Omaha, Nebraska. It still exists today, and there are several additional sites around the United States.
- Rock 'N' Roll ($1000): Alan Freed had a very interesting story, according to Wikipedia. He was caught up in the Payola scandals of the 1950s and died of alcoholism at age 43.
- Famous Pairs ($600): So.....Let's talk about Amos 'n' Andy for a moment. Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden were the voices of Amos...and Andy during the show's THREE DECADE stint on radio. Amos and Andy were Black characters. Correll and Gosden were white voice actors. Correll was a Barry Goldwater supporter (Goldwater wasn't really a fan of civil rights, as I understand it.) Gosden was a charter member of Augusta National Golf Club, where they play the Masters tournament. Augusta National famously did not allow Black golfers to become members until 1990.
- Fathers ($800): It is the hydrogen bomb and not the atomic bomb for Dr. Teller. It's the "second-generation" of atomic bomb, according to Wikipedia.
